I know, you might be saying enough already. Well I think I might just be getting started. Okay, as soon as this order is finished, I think I’ll find some places to go teach. Anyone up for a class in face canes? Leave a comment. Really, I mean it.
Seriously, I’ve been having more fun than I thought I would making these girls. I really don’t like to do the same thing over and over again. Done too much in that in my life. But with the girls each one takes special consideration.
I have to decide what hair color, what color will look right on her and whether she is sweet sassy or showy.
Another wonderful thing that is happening is I’m using up lots of canes and I’ll have to make more. Some of these cane are my favorites and I might make another just like it, and others I’ll be happy to not see them again. Not that they are bad canes, it’s just that I’ve made so many things out of them, I’m ready to move on.
A few more days to go and I’ll be finished and ready to get to my Christmas doings. After Christmas I’ll start on my next face cane tutorial. Can’t wait.

Hi Alice, In your video I saw those large vaces with faces…they are stupendous. How of course did you make them.
I am a retired teacher who just entered into polymer clay. I love it!!!! But don’t know which way to turn. So much to do and sometimes at my age feel don’t have that much time to do it all. Anyway I am trying. I am making beads, studying bead history, making some jewlery, I am also using my art background in papier mache sculpture to use the polymer clay canes to create texture on the sculpture. I use a papier mache mulch not newspapers,etd. Anyway my problem seems to be how much clay to use when I create a cane. Any advice? I would love to go to Fandango, our little group of SCPC that I joined is talking about it. I want to thank you for reading my note and hope to hear from you soon. Jacquie
Hey Jacquie, It sounds like you are having fun exploring polymer clay. There is so much to learn and experiment with.
I don’t make large canes. I don’t like to have to reduce them, I don’t like having the translucent around the design and I don’t like having the same cane hanging around for years and years. by making smaller canes, I don’t spend as much money on one cane. I can take 2 oz of two or three colors and make lots of coordinating canes. So my advice to you is to start with small canes and make more.
The girls on the vase in my welcome video are from the very first face cane I made. It was huge and very strange looking. But I loved it, I couldn’t believe I made a face from colored clay. I came across some women pins made with face canes and I couldn’t wait to try making one.
I had reduced some other canes that I made and wasn’t that successful with keeping the shapes, so I decided to take some slices from the large face before I reduced it. I took four and put them on the vase. Then I reduced the cane and pretty much ruined it. So I was glad that I had those four girls to remind me of my first cane. I did copy the look of the women pins done by that other artist, I’m sorry I don’t know who it was, if I did I would certainly give them credit, but I continued doing face canes until I developed my way of making them. Over the years I have made many face canes and thrown many away.
On the other side of me in the video is a sculpted head that I did. She has a bracelet holder wire thingy coming out of the top of her head. She is really pretty funny.
Have you tried baking the pc over your papier mache yet? I tried that, over the papier mache mulch, and the super sculpey cracked, so I moved on. but it is still on my list of wanna do. If you have a secret for that, I’d love to hear it.
