Polymer Clay Canes for Beginners

27 videos, step by step, beginner cane workshop beginner Cane Tutorial What people are saying about this tutorial. jennifer rose Just finished this first workshop on how to make canes, and I must say I learned so much. This is exactly what I have been looking for, someone who could explain cane making in a step by step that process that I could replicate. I watched the videos, went into my studio and began to create all of the canes Alice showed. I finally have results I can be proud of, and I say thank you so much for doing this workshop. My only question now is when do we get more workshops. If you are only going to take one online class let it be this workshop. Thank you Alice for your hard work, and your dedication to helping others learn the joys of polymer clay.

I used the same canes to create this bracelet that I used on my mermaid in the last post. And again, I layered the cane slices instead of butting them side by side as in the video. However, I did draw a pattern and built the fish first before putting it on the bracelet.

You can just see the pattern between the two fish. I’m fitting the fish on a piece of glass. To see my video that explains how to use a pattern and a piece of glass, just sign up for my newsletter. It’s free.

I covered a bracelet with black clay, then laid my fish on top. I made sure everything was securely down and baked it.

Notice the tail on this fish, there is another slice of this cane on the other side. In fact, these are the last two slices of  the cane.  In the last post I told you that this cane was made from left overs and I was only able to get 6 slices out of it. Four I used for my mermaid’s hat and these two for fish tails.  I didn’t waste that little bit of Skinner Blend.

  • That is so lovely! Do you ever worry about cracks when they are slipped on and off?

Lynda, I have bracelets that I have worn forever and I’ve never had any of them crack. I use Premo, it’s flexible. I started out years ago with Sculpey III but quickly learned that it does break and crack. I lost several things that I made that way.
I switched to Premo and never looked back. I haven’t tried Kato and would like to. I just never had very much time with my clay while I was working and just stuck to what was working for me. Now that I am focused on clay, I want to explore the different clays.

  • I’ve used a few, but not Premo. I mainly use Cernit and dearly love it for my sculpting. I’m trying one this morning. I don’t have the lovely canes that you do but plan to stamp, etc., just having fun with making beads and trying new things. Nice break and fun to do in between my sculpting. I enjoy your blog!

Thanks Lynda, I am crazy about sculpting, but I love cane work too. Good luck with the experiments. That may be what I love most about polymer clay. It can be so many different things, you don’t have to ever get bored. Have fun and I enjoy your blog too.

Hi, Was wondering if you ever sold you pieces in a gallery that does commissions. I open a gallery called Creative Fish. I love your work and think it would be great in my gallery. I would love to talk with you.

Please email me and I will give you my phone contact information
