Polymer Clay Canes for Beginners

27 videos, step by step, beginner cane workshop beginner Cane Tutorial What people are saying about this tutorial. jennifer rose Just finished this first workshop on how to make canes, and I must say I learned so much. This is exactly what I have been looking for, someone who could explain cane making in a step by step that process that I could replicate. I watched the videos, went into my studio and began to create all of the canes Alice showed. I finally have results I can be proud of, and I say thank you so much for doing this workshop. My only question now is when do we get more workshops. If you are only going to take one online class let it be this workshop. Thank you Alice for your hard work, and your dedication to helping others learn the joys of polymer clay.

  • Very useful..Thanks for sharing!

  • Alice

You’re welcome Malathy. Thanks for taking a few minutes to take a look.

  • Thanks so much, Alice… BIG help. For my first bracelet I used E6000 glue which worked really well. But I like the instant-on of the jet glue you used here.

    Kate

  • Which brands of clay do you recommend that are as flexible as needed for this technique?

  • Alice

You’re welcome Kate. I just keep getting the question, so I figured this was quicker for me.
I’m a instant woman, so I love super glue!

  • Alice

The only clay I use is Premo. I’m sure there are many others, but Premo is the only one I can recommend. Thanks for asking the question Mary Ann.

Wow Alice! That opened my mind to so much – from one simple thing comes a whole multitude of ideas! Thank you!

Now – here’s my question. How do you work with those long fingernails?? :0)

  • Alice

oh that makes my day aimee. I love to think of people out there churning ideas around and coming up with new things. Let me see what you come up with.

I’m still laughing, the fingernails just are. When I was a kid, I bit my nails, then when I was older, they were like paper, now they just grow and grow. All the vitamins I take maybe. I use them as clay tools sometimes. Mainly they don’t get in the way, but sometimes if I’m sculpting, I have to cut them back. More than you wanted to know? still laughing………..

I am so happy to stumble across this. I have been trying to figure out how to do this. I thought I would have to back it in clay but I see you don’t. One or more less steps for me. You do the gluing after you bake the bracelet, right?

  • Alice

Lynn, I’m glad it helped. Yes you bake it first then glue.

  • Thanks Alice, I have been toying with the idea of creating a bracelet but only got as far as buying the blanks. Now I’m raring to go!

  • Alice

You can do it Angie, I’d love to see your finished bracelet. Thanks for letting me know it helped you get started.

  • Pam

Alice, I found your wonderful tute while browsing around today for ideas. Now I think I’ll make a cuff bracelet. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • Alice

Good deal, that’s my job. Would love to see what you make, Pam. thanks for stopping by.

  • Hi Alice, thanks to your newsletter I found this tute. You have inspired me, I am going to give it a try. Thank you very much for the tutorial… and the newsletter.

  • Alice

I’m so glad Betty Jo. I’ve been very bad about sending out my newsletter, but that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t posting and making videos. :) Thank you for letting me know the newsletter sent you here, it will make me send one more often.

  • Hi Alice, got your latest newsletter today. I know what you mean as far as getting to do these things regularly. So many things get in the way. Just today I asked on another site about how to, about the bracelet. Your Video is timely so thank you for that.Even tho it probably was here before I have just taken an interest in bracelets.
I am wondering how it is you can stretch baked clay? Do you just bake it for a short time , then bake again? I do use Premo , but which one do you use?
    Soft or Classic.?

  • Alice

I’m so glad Elizabeth, taking the mystery out of finishing the bracelet was the goal. I use =remo, it’s not the only brand that works, just the one I use. Once it’s baked, it won’t stretch much but just enough to let you cover the ends. The clay shrinks just the smallest bit and when you pull it away from the form you have to stretch as you glue to cover the end of the blank.
    Thanks for leaving this comment.

  • Hello Alice, I got your newsletter today. Thank you very much.. but I can’t open your video…

I can hardly wait to try the bracelet. I was wondering if the faces on the bracelet were from a cane or if they were stamped? I did order you face cane dvd but I haven’t received it yet. Linda

  • Alice

Hi Linda, I’ve sent several emails to you today, one email with the links, I forwarded from yesterday. I think you might need to look in your spam box to see if they are there. Sorry for the delay, let me know if you still don’t receive them. Alice

    Thank you :)

  • Alice

Daniela, it’s lovely, I’m so glad my video helped. And thanks so much for the nice things you said about me on your blog. Alice

  • Janine

Hi Alice, found your website love it. Just watched the video on bracelet blanks, can you tell me what thickness you make the clay before you start added your face canes and about what thickness you slice your canes for the bracelets.

  • Alice

    Hi Janine,
Thanks for you orders….I usually make the base clay a medium thickness. About #5 on my pasta machine. I slice my faces about the same thickness. You don’t want them uber thin.
You’re going to ace great fun Janine, send pictures:)
    Alice

  • Lynn

So do you have an atlas? or another brand? Just curious….Thanks

  • Alice

Hi Lynn, not sure what you mean.
    Alice

  • Lynn

What brand of pasta machine do you have? I know each are sometimes different, a one on an atlas is the thickest while others are their hightest number for the thickest.

  • Deborah

Thank you for sharing these instructions! You mention that you purchase your metal bracelet blanks from The Clay Store but I can’t find a link to it online. Can you direct me to it? Thank you for sharing these instructions!

  • Alice

Since I wrote that post, the clay store has closed. I bought a large stock of blanks then and haven’t needed to buy more yet. Thanks for the reminder, I’ll take out the link.
I would suggest a google search, I think there are a couple of companies out there that sell brass bracelet blanks.
If you find a great source, let us know here on this post….that would be wonderful.
    Thanks, Alice

  • Deborah

I’ll search for them. Do you ever make bracelets without the brass blank? I was wondering if it could be used to form the bracelet and then taken out after baking. Could it perhaps be taken out after baking and another layer of polymer put in its place? I have two daugters with metal allergies, which made me wonder about it.

  • Alice

You sure can use the blanks as forms only Deborah, you just have to make the base clay pretty thick. Otherwise when you wear it, it will heat up from the heat of you body and loosen up around your wrist and fall off.
Or you can make a closed bracelet around a form like a soda can.
you can bake any of them as may times as you want, so yes, you can add to the base clay after it’s baked and removed from the clay.

  • Deborah

Thanks for the information, Alice. I had no idea just body heat would soften the polymer after it’s baked.

  • Alice

It’s strange but true Deborah :)…

  • Wow! That’s awesome, will have to try that next time i make some.
I’ve been covering both sides on my last collection, my blanks are really sharp on the ends, and the metal gives allergies to a lot of people (including me)
Thanks for the tutorial, love it!

  • Alice

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for stopping by.

  • Deborah Groom

    Hi there,
Thanks so much for the video and all the helpful advice. With the bracelet blanks I cover the inside with a light faux suede so there is no reaction to metal. I found the blanks at Shades of Clay in Canada. They are about $3 each and come in three widths.
I was really glad to hear that Premo gives a little rather than having to buy Bake and Bend. I like the product but it is a little expensive. Premo will be perfect.
I tend to bake items like this for 30 minutes but I’ve been hearing that 45 minutes is better. What do you think?
    Thanks,
    Deborah Groom

  • Alice

Deborah, so glad it helped and the bracelet you made was fabulous, thanks so much for taking the time to email me pictures.
And thanks for the tips about covering the back and where to purchase more blanks.
I bake by the manufacturer suggestions and don’t like to over bake. But I know that others bake longer.
    Thank you for stopping by.
    Alice

  • Rosita Cortes

Thank you very much. I had problem with my bracelet, that the end showed the metal. Now I know how to fix it

  • Alice

Ah…I’m so glad it helped Rosita, that makes me happy. thanks for letting me know.

  • Mary Lou Tomecek Baker

    Hi Alice,

I’m a newbie here. I just want to say I’m really impress with your site. I love the tutorials and all the tips you give. I’m also impress with your responses to all of the comments. I’m somewhat intimidated with the face canning technique. They are all very beautiful. Thanks again looking forward to the newsletter.

  • Alice

    Hi Mary Lou,
Welcome to the fabulous world of polymer clay…you love it this world, great fun! Sorry it took me so long to answer, but it was at Fandango enjoying all my claying friends there.
face canes are just one cane at a time, you can do it. Just start small, don’ t make a giant mama jama cane that might not turn out exactly like what you invisioned. First tries rarely do.
Just try, you’ll be surprised what you can do.
Thank for taking time out to let me know you like my blog…..:)

  • Alice, Just watched your Pen & Ink video I ordered which was great but I thought I’d take a look at this bracelet video, too. I just received a custom order for a bracelet made with a blank. I never did it before but who am I to tell the customer she can’t have what she wants, so your video was very timely. Funny how things appear when you need them.

  • Alice

    Perrie,
Thanks so much for letting me know you enjoyed both the video you purchased and the free video. I don’t think you’ll have any problem. I’m glad it could help. I’d love to see pictures of what you do. Alice

  • Charline

Thanks, Alice!! Do we need to do this with the bracelets we made yesterday?

    Charline
