What people are saying about this tutorial.

Just finished this first workshop on how to make canes, and I must say I learned so much. This is exactly what I have been looking for, someone who could explain cane making in a step by step that process that I could replicate. I watched the videos, went into my studio and began to create all of the canes Alice showed. I finally have results I can be proud of, and I say thank you so much for doing this workshop. My only question now is when do we get more workshops. If you are only going to take one online class let it be this workshop. Thank you Alice for your hard work, and your dedication to helping others learn the joys of polymer clay.
I’m working on this group of bracelets while being distracted by my life. I like that though, being able to stop claying and just leave it there until I have the time or the desire to work with it again. It’s a great feeling.
I had fun just arranging these three for a picture. Couldn’t decide which one to use. they almost look like an abstract piece of art when they are together this way.
I’ve listed one in my Etsy shop and there are three more in the oven. These three and the three in the oven are going with me to Tampa to The Creative Native event on Saturday.
There’s also lots to see and do in Tampa this weekend. An art events downtown on Friday evening at the Franklin Street Fine Woodwork Studios, one block away at the Cafe Hey and a Chalkwalk event all three days in the Hyde Park area. there is also an exhibit at Blake High School showcasing works by graduating art students.
I have been doing so many thing with clay this week and not really getting anything finished. I’ve done some pretty cool things, but nothing is ready to post.
Since I’ve been back from Fandango, I had been posting everyday and wanted to keep that up, just a goal I had. But this week I don’t have any finished items. I was feeling kind of bummed, like I wasn’t accomplishing anything.
I always find myself doing all kinds of odd things to distract myself. Looking through my inspiration books, thinking of a million things I want to try. Cleaning and sorting, mixing colors and looking at old canes with new eyes. I always know something wonderful is about to happen when I get like this. Which brought me to this afternoon’s “get out of this, whatever it is” break through.
I’ve been making face canes for the last few weeks, all different kinds, some successful and some not so. But all of them learning experiences. I began to straighten up my face canes and make room for more and realized just how many I had.
I began to look at them from different angles and started to laugh. I’m still laughing, because they’re funny and because I accomplished more than I set out to years ago with my first face cane. Even though I still have more I want to do, I am so delighted to have gotten this far. So I shook my finger in my own face and said, “just create”. It’s hard to remember to just have fun, but that’s the point after all. My “girls” reminded me.
So I’m posting tonight to share a few of my face canes with you. The ones with big lips, little eyes, blue eyes and brown, from the first ones with way too much red or not enough color at all, I hope they make you laugh too.
I love the way these flowers and leaves turned out. I had this idea while making the face cane. I can’t wait to use them on something else.
Flowers and Leaves
I made some canes that look like caladium leaves and want to make something for the Caladium Festival Poster contest in Lake Placid. Lake Placid is just south of us and is the caladium capital of the world. They are truly a colorful beautiful plant. Let’s hope I get around to it.
Okay, now I’ve totally lost my focus and plan to stop this and move to Plan B – making another face cane. But before I do, I’ve baked the face then made these flowers, put it all back in the oven again and am waiting for it to cure. I don’t think they go with her at all, not painterly enough, so I might not leave them with her. I don’t think they go with the canvas I painted either. But it’s all about experimenting until I’m happy. Can’t learn if you don’t try.
I am easily distracted today, lots of company this week and last, but it’s been great. Plus I’m going to artists day at the Sebring High School tomorrow. I’ll set up my work beside other local artist and answer questions from the art students. I’m always excited to share what I do with people and the kids are so interested. You should see the work they produce, seriously wonderful. Their teachers deserve a great deal of credit. So I need to gather my things and get ready.
An order from Boston Clay Works came today and included was one of their new eye class cases. I am thinking about what I want to cover it with while I’m still thinking about this face cane. I’m worse than I was when I was a kid and always jumping from one thing to another. so it’s kind of funny that I’m going back to my high school tomorrow.
But the bottom line is…..uh…….I’m sure you don’t want to hear me say I’m having fun one more time…..but I am.
I didn’t have as much time today as I wanted to spend with my face cane. Had to help with some yard work. It felt good to be outside in the wonderful weather. I did have time to paint this canvas and mess around with her neck and blouse. Colors still aren’t right, but I’m just going ahead with her and after she’s baked I’ll shade in under her chin with some wash.
I need to add wings and I want to do some flowers or something. I’m going to cure what I have so far and then add the other elements. I’m finding because I’ve been handling this one so much I need to get it cured.
I have been inspired by several folk artists and am trying to create my own folk angels. One of my favorite artists is Campbell Jane, I just love her work.
Another bracelet full of girls going to my Etsy Shop. Still great fun and still making me laugh, what more can you ask for?

I’m shutting down the One World, One Heart giveaway tomight ( 8:00 EST) to get ready for the big giveaway tomorrow. I’m giving away one of my profile face bracelets to a fellow blog owner.
Check back tomorrow for the winner. If if happens to be you….don’t worry, I’ll email you. 🙂
This is the bracelet I talked about on a previous post. It was made from slices of canes that were meant for other projects but weren’t used. I saved them instead of throwing them in the scrap pile. When I had enough to make this bracelet, I put them all together and this is the result.
I’m putting in my etsy shop today. It’s fun and colorful and I think with a pair of jeans and a white shirt, it would look pretty good. In fact this bracelet will probably go with whatever you wanted to wear.I’m starting to work on things to go with me to the Orlando Fandango. Masks and donations for their auction etc.
Plus I’m rearranging my work space. My husband is getting a new desk and I’m adding his old one to my work spaces. I know that all of you know what that means. Not looking forward to the moving and cleaning and “un-earthing” of things that I will now have to decide what to do with. Treasures you know, too good to just throw away.
After seeing all the fabulous “found art” being produce while I was flying around the blogs with One World One Heart, I think we need an exchange blog. I have things I know you would just love to have, maybe you have something to trade. I’d love to give all these buttons and ribbons and old books and just stuff I’ve collected over the years to someone who would use it.
More bracelets. The crazy one is made from scrap slices that I cut and didn’t use on other projects. Maybe I cut too many or maybe I decided that cane just didn’t work.
I can never bear to smash perfectly good slices of cane, so I just put them on a piece of deli paper in one of my clay drawers. (See this video for clay drawer ideas)
When I have enough, I make something crazy out of them. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you have an adventurous spirit, maybe you should try it. If nothing else it’s kind of a record of your canes.
I’ve been working hard on an order for my face canes. It was rainy this weekend. Perfect for clay and creating, I really enjoyed it. Still have more to go. I just thought I’d share some here.
A funny thing happened. I was so happy that the shop I stopped in while I was in Tampa wanted to buy some of my pieces. So happy I shared it with you. Now I have to tell you that I emailed the shop and haven’t heard a word since.
Because of that shop, I realized that there were so many other possibilities out there that I wasn’t looking at. So It’s okay!
I began to look at dress boutiques and other speciality shops. I found quite a few and have emailed several. I’ve heard back from one, but she only carries local artists. she still was a bit interested and asked for some time to think about it.
As you can see, I am still stuck on Zentangle canes. I really have had fun with them.
I did my emailing on Friday and this week end was Halloween, so I’m not discouraged yet. Besides, I still have the whole United States and Canada left….and I’ve started receiving commission checks from Julia’s Art Gallery on Pine Island. I told you about that trip in September.
So all of these items are now listed in my Etsy Shop with more to come. Life is sweet.
